League One Walsall face Championship Coventry City at the Banks’s Stadium on Saturday with both sides looking to step up their preparations for the new season.

The Saddlers were easily beaten by Wolves on Tuesday night but boss Chris Hutchings was not too concerned by the 4-0 scoreline.

‘It was a tough work-out for us, but that is exactly what we wanted,’ he told Walsall’s official website.

‘We want to see how we react and deal with certain situations when we are put under the cosh in order to stop teams playing because this will invariably happen during the course of the season ahead.

‘The players have to know their roles and be adaptable.

‘It is all about getting our own match fitness levels up and building an understanding.’

For the Sky Blues, a low-key set of friendlies has seen them give little away at the back but struggle to turn plenty of possession into goals at the other end.

Aidy Boothroyd will not be too concerned about that at present, with the constant talk of new strikers coming into the Ricoh Arena doing its bit to keep the incumbent forwards on their toes.

The two sides last met competitively in January 2004 when goals were no problem for what was then Eric Black’s City side.

Gary McSheffrey netted twice in a 6-1 away victory.
