The appointment of a new Coventry City manager will not be made until after Tuesday night’s game at Shrewsbury with the importance of the decision magnified by the key points to have come out of Thursday night’s fans forum.

With owners SISU said to have committed to the club for the next three seasons and provided a playing budget towards the top end for League One the opportunity remains for the Sky Blues to come out of the third tier and establish themselves in the Championship as a club capable of reaching the top-flight with all of its attendant riches.

The managerial shortlist is now down to three names with Paul Ince another to have been interviewed for the post this week. Whatever structure the club opt for (be it experienced manager, rookie boss or coach) it does appear at last as though professional business practices are being brought to bear in terms of expenditure, costs and player rewards.

Tim Fisher denied that the club had become a ‘laughing stock’ when questioned at the forum but the current situation is, in fact, even worse than that. A laughing stock can continue to attract attention and notoriety but City are in danger of being forgotten about completely with even long-term supporters pondering a parting of the ways.

Arguably not since the move to bring in Jimmy Hill when we were last at this level of English football has more importance been attached to the appointment of a new manager.
