Sky Blues stick with…Sky Blue!

On the day that Cardiff City confirmed they would be changing from blue to red shirts next season, Coventry City launched another all-Sky Blue home kit for the 2012/13 season which can be seen at the official club website.

A smart yellow and green away kit has also been launched in the colours of club sponsors City Link as they enter the final year of their deal.

The Sky Blues of course were not always thus with Jimmy Hill changing the club’s colours as part of his mission to make them appeal to a wider audience in the 1960’s.

Cardiff’s reasoning for their radical departure (given that they are known as the Bluebirds) is that a red kit will broaden their appeal in ‘international markets’ and is part of a big rebranding exercise at the Welsh club that is designed to unlock further investment from their Malaysian owners.

The most interesting aspect of that story is that Cardiff are losing money at a reported £1m a month.

Financial madness continues apace in the Football League it seems.
