Coventry City are taking the first steps to securing the long-term value of their key players.

The ‘big four’ of Keiren Westwood, Aron Gunnarsson, Danny Fox and Scott Dann have all opened talks with the club over extending the contracts they currently have, all of which run until the end of the 2010/11 season.

Westwood, along with Leon Best, meanwhile is set to be handed his Ireland debut against Nigeria this week.

‘This season has been up and down for me,’ Best said, quoted by the Press Association ahead of Friday’s friendly.

‘I had a good spell in the cup and the period when I had the mask on.

‘Towards the end it was upsetting with injuries. So for me to get called up is something I see as a blessing and I’m over the moon with it.

‘The only thing I can do is take it in my stride. I can’t think about it too much because it’s the highest level and nerves would kick in. Hopefully everything will go my way.’
