Although QPR boss Ian Holloway felt that City had been handed an early Christmas present, the home side rarely threatened a back four superbly marshalled by Robert Page and Richard Shaw.
‘Robert and Shawsy were outstanding,’ said manager Micky Adams afterwards, before adding: ‘But the whole defence were tremendous.
‘The full-backs tucked round nicely while Michael Doyle and Isaac Osbourne were a great screen in front of the back four – they worked as hard as I’ve seen any two midfielders work.’
Although Gareth Ainsworth was always a threat on the right-hand side and had Rangers’ two best chances, City always looked good for a point and were the stronger side in the last fifteen minutes.
The icing on the cake came when McSheffrey was sent clear, looked to have miscontrolled but recovered and was brought down by goalkeeper Royce who received a red card for his troubles.
McSheffrey slammed the spot-kick past sub goalie Rose to make it three wins in a row for City and put them nearer to the play-off places than the relegation zone.
