John Hughes will take charge of Hartlepool United for the first time this weekend aiming to end his new club’s run of 16 games without a win when they take on the Sky Blues in a League One encounter with plenty of ramifications at the wrong end of League One.

The Scot’s appointment was met with some indifference after the breakdown of talks with number one target Phil Brown but the ‘Who’s Hughes’ headlines do an injustice to a man who has a host of SPL managerial experience to his name.

‘I’m not here for the short term,’ said Hughes. ‘If I’m down here for 20 years then I’ve been a success and hopefully that will be with Hartlepool.

‘gaffer’

Hartlepool has proved to be a graveyard of managerial ambition for some, including Coventry’s own FA Cup hero Keith Houchen, but one of the greatest gaffers of all them cut his teeth with the perennial strugglers from the North-East.

In words that could have been attributed to Brian Clough himself, Hughes said: ‘I’m going to do what I have to do. If I have to beg, borrow, steal to get success that’s what I’ll do, but it will be done with good values and I think me and this club go well together.’

An interesting appointment and one that Vital Coventry hopes is a success, after Saturday of course!
