Coventry City manager Lee Carsley has made the first signing of his interim spell in charge by sealing a loan deal for Southampton’s 23-year-old central defender Aaron Martin.

Martin, who will have a short trip to meet up with his new colleagues as they face Bournemouth on Tuesday night, spent time on loan with Crystal Palace earlier in the season.

Carsley’s first big call as manager was to relegate William Edjenguele to the bench for the games against Bury and Crewe in the JPT but the Frenchman returned to the side on Saturday with Richard Wood unavailable and partnered Nathan Cameron.

Martin will add competition to an area that is deemed to have lost the Sky Blues some sloppy goals in recent weeks, Carsley telling the Coventry Telegraph: “We’ll work on our shape on Monday and set off with a team we think we can beat Bournemouth but we must be tighter.”

***Update***Carsley has also recalled striker Cody McDonald to the club at the first opportunity available following his loan spell with Gillingham.
