Having emerged from their Wembley heartache in the League Cup final looking to mount a promotion push, Cardiff City entertain Coventry City on Wednesday night knowing that three points is vital if they are to remain firmly in the mix for a play-off place.

Sunday’s goalless draw at home to Burnley brought out some frustration in a large home crowd who have seen their team come so near and yet so far in a number of different competitions over the past few seasons.

A generally agreed verdict on the game was that the Bluebirds looked jaded after a tough run of fixtures but manager Malky Mackay was upbeat afterwards.

‘We have had one defeat in four games and we are in the fight for play-offs,’ he said.

‘We have nine games to go and we are sitting two points from fourth position.

Burnley was one of those games where you just hoped something goes in off someone`s backside.’
