‘It was a wonderful first game for me and what excites me most is that I think there is a lot more to come from these players.’

New Coventry City manager Steven Pressley was a delighted man after seeing his side come back from a goal down to beat Scunthorpe at Glanford Park and stay within reach of a play-off place.

‘Their response to going behind was magnificent,’ added the 39-year-old. ‘To me, they were outstanding. I thought we passed the ball well in difficult conditions, we defended well.’

Two more sides in the bottom six of League One, Colchester United and Hartlepool United, come to the Ricoh Arena over the next week.

Nothing less than six points will do for City’s promotion ambitions but having lost their last three league games at home the new man in charge will not be taking anything for granted.

Scunthorpe manager Brian Laws, meanwhile, felt the game turned on the referee’s decision not to issue a red card to William Edjenguele in the first half.

‘Coventry should have been down to 10 men when their centre chopped off Andy Barcham when he would have been clean through on goal early in the first half.

‘It was a red card offence but the referee took no action. It was a major, major decision that could have changed the game and you hope referees get these right.

‘But he got it completely wrong. The fourth official knows he did and so does everybody else. Even the assessor was shaking his head.’
