Saturday’s big League One clash at Glanford Park saw Coventry City begin their last roll of the dice for a play-off place, the trip to Scunthorpe the first of four consecutive games against teams struggling at the foot of the table and the first game since the appointment of Steven Pressley as manager.

The 39-year-old Scot took charge of training on Friday morning as he settled into his new surroundings before giving an assured performance at his introductory press conference.

The visitors were looking for their 11th away league game of the season but the Iron, however, went into the match in fine form on home soil and keen to nullify the threat of the man who scored 11 goals for them earlier in the season, Sky Blues striker Leon Clarke.

Heavy rain in the area caused a 1pm pitch inspection but the go-ahead was given with home boss Brian Laws making three changes to his side and handing an immediate debut to loan signing Eirik Holmen Johansen, a young goalkeeper signed from Manchester City this week.

William Edjenguele returned to the Sky Blues line-up in place of Nathan Cameron, a change made by Pressley but one that had been expected under interim boss Lee Carsley.

Akpo Sodje opened the scoring for the hosts on 8 minutes before Carl Baker levelled things up on the stroke of half-time and then Clarke settled things with a 77th minute winner, a pleasant change as the Sky Blues come from behind to win rather than throwing away a lead.

The three points ensure that the season will not yet drift to a tame conclusion as City are now five points off the play-offs with a trio of games to come against teams struggling alongside Scunthorpe.
