Coventry City are reported to have received a transfer fee in the region of £1m from Newcastle United for teenage midfielder Gael Bigirimana with chief executive Tim Fisher promising that the money will be reinvested in all aspects of the club.
First reaction to the deal, as with anything SISU do, will be negative from many supporters. The decision will however be judged a good one if City do continue making signings capable of getting out of League One and also put some funds into the academy.
In a football world where Arsenal cannot hold onto Robin Van Persie, the Sky Blues have no chance of keeping a player when he was wanted in the Premier League but Southampton have shown that the pain of losing promising young players can be turned into the longer term gain of a much more competitive first team.
Bigirimana’s exit (and he was far from certain to be a regular in the coming season) provides an opportunity to strengthen in the short term which must be taken over the next few weeks.
