John Fleck’s move to Coventry City is unaffected by the news on Monday that the ‘newco’ Rangers are disputing the status of five of the players who have made moves away from Ibrox this summer, leading to a delay in international transfer clearance being granted for those concerned.
The Sky Blues came to an agreement with Charles Green of the newco and Fleck came down to England with the best wishes of the Glasgow club.
City fans with memories of a trio of deals done with Rangers in the late 80’s and early 90’s will be hoping that the midfielder proves more of a hit than any of Kevin Drinkell, Terry Butcher (as a player) or Sandy Robertson did at Highfield Road.
‘miserable’
Drinkell came to Coventry with a brief to get the goals that would make John Sillett’s side title contenders (younger readers will have to trust us on this) but ended up as something of a figure of fun after a miserable spell at the club.
His former Ibrox colleague Butcher was surprisingly named as Sillett’s successor just months after starring for England in the 1990 World Cup but the transfer fee that City paid for his playing registration was money down the drain as injuries took their toll on the new boss and led to his managerial reign being cut short after an attempt to renegotiate his contract.
Robertson barely featured after Phil Neal signed him to replace Chris Marsden, the on-loan midfielder who had starred during his brief spell at the club but whose permanent signature had not been sealed. The young Scot suffered badly in comparison and was probably grateful for the chance to return home with Dundee United.
***Update***Another player who plied his trade in the SPL last season, former Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings, is in talks with the Sky Blues over a potential move.
