Coventry City’s signing of attacking midfielder John Fleck on Wednesday has achieved the rare feat of generating excitement among Sky Blues supporters about the message it sends out about the club’s ambitions for next season.

Fleck’s arrival from the ‘newco’ Rangers FC, with City not paying a fee but including a sell-on clause, is the most innovative signing the club has made in the past couple of years.

He burst onto the scene at Ibrox and even at his young age has gained plenty of experience at the top of the SPL and in Europe.

‘Potential’

Clearly Fleck is far from the finished article otherwise there would have been interest in him from the Premier League and top of the Championship but his potential to spark a promotion push at the Ricoh Arena next season has made him a vital signing already.

Sheffield Wednesday meanwhile are the latest club to be linked with City’s talismanic defender Richard Keogh although Vital Coventry’s spies in the Steel City feel that the Owls are already well-stocked at the back having signed the likes of Joe Mattock and Anthony Gardner already this summer.
