Coventry City’s increasing competition for first-team places could be made even fiercer when the loan window opens as manager Mark Robins considers adding to his promotion-chasing squad.

The deadline week departures of Cody McDonald and Roy O’Donovan have freed up funds for at least one new addition and the first name in the frame is Southampton’s young midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

The England Under-19 international was very highly regarded by former Saints boss Nigel Adkins and netted at the Ricoh Arena on his second start for Southampton when they beat City in last season’s FA Cup.

His chances in the Premier League have become more limited in recent weeks and, with Adkins now having left St Mary’s, he is believed to be available for a loan spell.

Before the window opens, of course, the Sky Blues play their sold-out JPT Area Final first leg against Crewe Alexandra and boss Robins is urging his players to embrace the occasion in a stadium packed with City supporters.
