The cry of ‘never again’ was once more heard from the Coventry City hierarchy after a shambolic last-day display at Charlton left the Sky Blues relying on other results to maintain their place in the Championship.

Attention turned immediately to who City would sign over the summer months with moves for loan star Kasper Schmeichel and Wolves striker Freddy Eastwood dominating the rumour mill.

‘We want to sign (Schmeichel) and he wants to come,’ confirmed chairman Ray Ranson at the time.

‘He likes the manager and he likes his style of play.

‘We have drawn up a package which, in principle, he is happy with and we just have to agree a fee with Manchester City now.

‘He is on Premiership wages but we think he has great career ahead of him and we think we can agree a package.’
