Former Coventry City favourite Richard Shaw is to continue his playing career next season after signing a new deal at Millwall.

The 39-year-old defender joined the Lions as a player-coach from the Sky Blues last summer and made over 40 appearances, winning the club’s player of the season award.

He told the South London Press: ‘I am pleased to have been given a playing contract.

‘It was a bit of a standing joke with the lads last season that I came as a coach and ended up playing so many games.

‘The boss Willie Donachie has spoken about combining playing with coaching but after I talked to him, he said carry on with how I was doing things. At the end of next season we will have another look at each other.’
