Sheffield United and Preston North End both had midweek games in hand on the teams above them as the Championship relegation battle enters the final straight but neither side were able to pick up a win from tough away fixtures with QPR and Reading respectively.

Those defeats, coupled with Coventry City`s excellent weekend win against Watford means the Sky Blues have some breathing space with four teams and ten points separating them from the drop zone. All of the struggling teams except Middlesbrough now have seven games left to play.

Two of the bottom eight face each other at the weekend with Andy Thorn taking his side to Pride Park to face Derby County, hoping to move closer to the 50-point mark which should see another season in the Championship safely under their belt.
