Having seen former Sheffield Wednesday skipper Richard Wood net a late equaliser against his old club on Saturday, Owls boss Alan Irvine was left to rue the defensive mistake that allowed the goal to be scored.

‘We know it was a bad goal to concede but you can’t dwell on it and make it cost you further,’ said the Scot, who felt his side were worth all three points at the Ricoh Arena.

‘It has today – we’ve not got what we deserved – but we must respond to the set-back in the right way.’

Chris Coleman again saw his side improve after half-time for a third consecutive game and admitted: ‘We have to play from the first minute, not the 45th.’

As for Wood, his restrained celebration summed up a day of mixed emotions for a player so long associated with the Hillsborough club but who was the subject of jeers from the away end throughout the game.

He told the official Coventry City website: ‘I thought we deserved a point and I thought a draw was a fair result.’
