With his Coventry City side now on the brink of relegation to League One following the defeat by Millwall on Tuesday night, manager Andy Thorn finally let rip at those above him for ‘killing’ the Sky Blues chances of a successful season.
‘From day one there’s been no help with new players or anything like that,’ he said.
‘We’ve tried and tried and given our hardest and done everything…we’ve still got a chance to stay in there. It’s probably not the right time to talk because I’m angry and I’m upset about it.
‘The lack of resources, the close season and early part of the season up until Christmas has killed us.’
Upbeat throughout the campaign, even as anti-SISU protests were a feature of City’s early home games, Thorn’s belief in his players has never wavered and he was once again supportive of them after Gary McSheffrey’s penalty miss was compounded by Shane Lowry’s winning goal for the visitors.
‘Every time we’ve put the players on the pitch they’ve been bang at it, they’ve given their all for me and for the club – we just haven’t had enough of them.
‘I’m angry because I see the hurt in the players when they give everything but they’ve had no help, we’ve had no help, full stop. So that’s where we are, that hurts.’
Relegation will be confirmed on Saturday should City fail to beat Doncaster Rovers at the Ricoh Arena or if Bristol City overcome Barnsley at Ashton Gate and, although Thorn’s thoughts probably echo the majority of match-going supporters, the prospect at present is of continued decline in League One rather than an immediate return to the Championship.
