Aidy Boothroyd named an unchanged side for Saturday’s Championship clash against Sheffield United and was rewarded with an excellent display from the Sky Blues which had everything but a winning goal.
City’s front four caused plenty of problems for the Blades’ defence but were thwarted more than once by a combination of the woodwork, the visiting goalkeeper and some wayward finishing.
Micky Adams’ men scrapped and battled throughout, taking advantage of some lenient refereeing and in such a situation were always likely to get one chance to pull off a smash-and-grab raid.
Luckily for the hosts Kieren Westwood was on hand to keep that effort out and despite drawing a blank, City were warmly applauded off the field at the final whistle.
“I think today we have provided fantastic entertainment and created numerous chances – enough chances to win five games – and we played very well but we didn’t take the chances,” said Boothroyd afterwards.
“I think we mixed our game up well. We created loads of chances and their goalkeeper was their best player. We also hit the bar two or three times – I lost count in the end.
“We asked a lot of questions of them and they had to defend for their lives because they didn’t have much of the game.”
Adams admitted: “We rode our luck at times but in terms of defending when we had to we were excellent, particularly from corners and free-kicks and especially in the first half.”
