Former Tranmere Rovers midfielder Steven Jennings is training with Coventry City after the expiry of his Motherwell contract and could get an early chance to impress when the Sky Blues begin their pre-season friendlies against Hinckley this weekend.

Now 27, Jennings spent three years in the SPL and helped Motherwell finish third last season which, with Rangers barred from European competition, meant a place in the Champions League qualifiers.

Despite that success however the continuing financial uncertainty in the Scottish game meant Fir Park boss Stuart McCall was unable to offer a new contract to a player who has been described as the ‘heartbeat’ of the Motherwell side.

140 league appearances for Tranmere means Jennings is well versed in the 46-game slog that is a season in League One and his description as a defensive midfielder, capable of breaking up the opposition’s play and bringing his own wide men into the game, is something that City lack in their current squad.
