The news that Coventry City’s academy has achieved Category 2 status and will continue to receive match-funding from both the Premier League and Football League is a genuine good news story amid a seemingly never ending diet of negative press about the club.

SISU’s decision to fund the investment needed to meet the Category 2 status deserves credit and comes amid some other positive signs from the club’s owners.

It’s early days of course and the first-team squad clearly needs further investment in new signings but, in Tim Fisher and Steve Waggott, City do have people at the club who are talking to the fans and seemingly trying hard to right previous wrongs.

The long-term future of CCFC remains in doubt but the same could be said of any club outside of those whose Premier League status is set in stone.

And the overall picture of what has happened this summer (Richard Shaw replacing Steve Harrison, the John Fleck signing and now the academy news) is in stark contrast to this time last year when Ken Dulieu was strolling around the Sky Blues’ Portuguese training camp in his leisure gear while achieving very little indeed.
