City’s Biggest Opponent? Themselves!

Coventry City’s 1-0 win against Tranmere Rovers on Wednesday night pushed the Sky Blues into the top ten in League One and means that a play-off place remains in reach of Mark Robins’ side.

A top-six finish is still a big ask given that City have played more games than the sides around them but the win over Rovers showed that they have nothing to fear from any other team in the division.

The biggest obstacle to the home side taking all three points on Wednesday night was themselves with what Robins called ‘sloppy’ play after the game. The occasional misunderstanding at the back or a misplaced pass leading to anxiety amongst the fans.

Tranmere were stronger after the break and will feel aggrieved that they did not score from the chances they had but those opportunities came mainly from set-pieces, defended with a combination of bravery, good goalkeeping and the occasional rugby scrum in the penalty area.

In terms of getting behind the opposition defence and creating chances in open play it was the Sky Blues who remained dangerous until the final whistle. It’s not perfect but, as Robins said afterwards, at League One level it is never going to be.

Having something to play for on two fronts at this stage of the season though is very welcome.

***Update***Blair Adams has signed a permanent deal with the club, signing for two-and-a-half years after his release by Sunderland.

“I’m delighted to secure a player of his potential,” said Robins.

“Blair has proven capable of playing at a consistent level and will, I am sure, be an asset to us. He also has the personal qualities I am looking for in players I recruit.”
