Sheffield Wednesday central defender Richard Wood, a long-time target for Coventry City, is on his way out of Hillsborough after his contract demands were too much for the Owls to swallow.

Manager Brian Laws told BBC Radio Sheffield: ‘Richard and his agent believe he should be the highest paid player at the club, we can’t pay that.’

The 24-year-old, who handed in a transfer request last year after enquiries from the Ricoh Arena, has been made available with immediate effect.

The Sky Blues are likely to still be interested given their recent defensive problems.

Chris Coleman has chopped and changed at the back to find an effective centre-half pairing but has been unable to do so so far this season.
