Coventry City’s ‘home’ defeat at the hands of Brentford on Sunday deflated the air of optimism that had built up around Steven Pressley’s young team while reports of conflict between supporters outside Sixfields was a reminder of the challenges that lay ahead for the club to ever regain its former place in the affections of the city from which it takes its name.
The Bees are a very strong, experienced League One outfit and had a just a bit too much about them for the Sky Blues, who badly missed captain Carl Baker.
Another large travelling support will go to Stevenage this Saturday and can be confident of a good result against a side who are in poor form with three straight defeats.
Manager Graham Westley has tried to boost confidence in his young squad after a heavy loss at MK Dons, saying: ‘The key is they keep learning the lessons, keep the belief about ourselves, keep the faith in what we are doing and we will get to where we need to.
‘I have no doubt about that – there are a lot of hungry boys there.’
For City, without good results on the pitch, the future is still hugely uncertain. As the weather worsens crowds at Sixfields are likely to have stagnated and last week’s pronouncements look to have ended any lingering hopes of a short-term deal to come back to the Ricoh Arena.
***Update*** The club have again been proactive in their announcement that a new permanent club shop and ticket office will be opening in the city soon and this all fits with a lot of good stuff going on both on and off the pitch. Without any progress, however, on the main issue, it unfortunately doesn’t add up to enough for the club to be successful going forward.
