Coventry City are expected to complete the loan signing of striker Chris Dagnall on the deadline day for emergency signings after the Tykes themselves landed a frontman in the shape of Nottingham Forest’s Marcu Tudgay.

A regular goalscorer with Rochdale between 2006 and 2010, Dagnall then moved to Scunthorpe United and on to Barnsley in January 2012. He has netted once in ten games for the Championsip side this season.

The Sky Blues will be hoping that their new signing can make an immediate impact in front of nearly 7,000 visiting fans at MK Dons this weekend in the absence of Leon Clarke from the side. Another huge City contingent made the same journey last season and saw a stand-in forward, in the shape of Stephen Elliott, turn in a matchwinning display as David McGoldrick sat out a suspension.

Although manager Steven Pressley is clearly no fan of the loan market the arrival of a striker will allow him to field what has become his favoured formation in the game and provide a partner for Callum Wilson up front.

***Update*** City have also signed Yeovil central defender Danny Seaborne until January, the 26-year-old described by Steven Pressley as ‘strong and imposing figure’ in the back four and Sheffield Wednesday forward Chris Maguire, also until January.

Pressley said: “Chris is a really exciting, versatile player and I’m looking forward to working with him.

“He’s got a great set-piece delivery, he’s quick and he can play both out wide or as a striker, so he’s a player that brings good versatility and that is important within our tight group.”
