Perhaps the best £750 ever spent by Coventry City was on Blackburn Rovers striker Clarrie Bourton, spotted playing reserve team football by the great Harry Storer in the early 1930’s.

In the 1931/32 season, Bourton hammered in 49 league goals, his partnership with Jock Lauderdale causing havoc throughout the division.

Bourton, who carried on scoring regularly throughout his time with the club, netted seven hat-tricks in that incredible campaign and assumed legendary status even before making crucial contributions to the successful seasons that followed.
