A Word For Roy

Roy O’Donovan’s Coventry City career will go down as a footnote in the club’s history but the striker’s rare appearances in a Sky Blue shirt have always shown him to be a player determined to give his all when called upon.

It is usually only in the cup competitions that O’Donovan is handed a brief chance to shine and so it was on Saturday when he made City’s final goal against Arlesey.

‘Roy’s a willing runner and as well as playing a part in the third goal he was unfortunate at the end because he got himself into a great position and Carl Baker opted to shoot,’ said Mark Robins after the game.

It’s unlikely of course to lead to a longer run in the team, especially with David McGoldrick available once again for this week’s League One double header. O’Donovan makes some intelligent runs and works hard but never looks like scoring on a regular basis.

Being used as the striker of last resort must be fairly dispiriting but the Irishman, from the outside at least, has always accepted his situation with good grace and aimed to make the best of his intermittent opportunities.
