Coventry City`s heavy win at Hartlepool on Saturday was their fourth in five games and provided many positives to take into a busy upcoming schedule of games. It also provided further vindication of Mark Robins` confidence that his methods will, slowly but surely, have the Sky Blues on an upward curve.
Injuries may have played a part in the manager`s team selection but his inclusion of both Frank Moussa and Gary McSheffrey in the starting XI was spot on for this particular game. Adam Barton, meanwhile, is clearly a player the manager feels has something to offer and his place on the bench followed by a goalscoring substitute`s appearance will have boosted the young midfielder`s confidence.
Goals from midfield have been missing from City`s armoury for some time so the brace for Carl Baker (in addition to his strike against Scunthorpe) and strikes from Moussa and Barton were very welcome.
‘ruthless’
The signing of Blair Adams and his immediate start also show a ruthless side to Robins when considering that he has already signed a left-back during his short time in charge but clearly felt the position still posed a problem.
No-one is getting carried away, of course, and the two games against Colchester and Portsmouth this week need to provide City with four points at least if the upward progression is to be maintained.
Pleasingly, though, when faced with opponents who were there to be beaten the Sky Blues did that in a professional and clinical manner for the second time (after York) under Robins.
