Dennis Wise will register as a player at Swindon Town following his appointment as manager but hopes he will not be needed much next season.

The 39-year-old finished the season on a high by netting Coventry City’s last goal of the season to cap an impressive stay at the Ricoh Arena.

He said of his new role, for which he will be helped by former Chelsea team-mate Gus Poyet: ‘I want a fit and strong side because once you have that you have a mentally strong side and that will help us no end.

‘I am sure the players will do well for us and keep us out of the side but because we will have a relatively small squad the option will be there.’

Wise added: ‘There are a lot of people I have worked under at all levels, who I can pick up the phone and ask for help if needs be.’

Perhaps some of the Sky Blues’ fringe players and youngsters could be set for loan spells at the County Ground next season.
