It’s too late to help Coventry City but will the Sky Blues’ plight now force the Football League into changing their rules and regulations to prevent a club simply upping and moving to another town despite the availability of a stadium in their home city?
The League may have expressed ‘deep regret’ at having to approve a groundshare with Northampton but that means little to supporters. Similarly the idea that a £1m bond will somehow guarantee that the club’s owners will one day move back to the city is laughable.
In the wake of the relocation of Wimbledon to Milton Keynes it was thought that the subsequent change in rules would prevent such a situation ever happening again but at what point would the League stand up and say to Coventry City that you have to be playing in the area from which you take your name?
The FL’s official website lists four values of which two have clearly been violated by this decision.
Community: ‘We are at the heart of 72 communities across England and Wales, and share the pride and heritage of each.’
Progession: ‘We are a modern, forward-looking organisation that is always striving to improve the game, our competitions and the experience for fans.’
None of this is to excuse SISU, Otium and all the other parties who have dragged the name of Coventry City down. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that such a situation has been allowed to happen because of the complete lack of leadership, guidance and regulation from the game itself.
