Coventry City face Gillingham at Sixfields on Sunday and are likely to come up against their former striker Cody McDonald in the game.

The former non-league hotshot made a permanent move to Priestfield in the summer after two productive loan spells with the club, one before and one during his time as a CCFC player.

McDonald suffered the unfair pressure of being City’s only outfield signing in the 2011 summer window and was expected to get the goals that kept the Sky Blues in the Championship.

A long injury lay-off kept him out for a crucial period of the season and although McDonald showed glimpses of his quality he was unable to maintain a consistent run of games and goals in League One last season and clearly didn’t convince either Mark Robins or Steven Pressley of his qualities.

McDonald missed out on Gillingham’s weekend game against Crawley with a stomach bug after boss Martin Allen had said he looked ‘sharp in training’ but is expected to be fit for the trip to Northampton.

Allen has defended fellow striker Bayo Akinfenwa after he expressed his displeasure at being substituted early on in the Crawley game.

Allen told the Kent Messenger: “I don’t blame him. I wouldn’t have liked it had I been taken off after half an hour either. He was disappointed and that was understandable.”
