And so the search begins for yet another new Coventry City manager but this time the club holds more aces than it has done in the recent past when the decision has been made to part company with the man in the hotseat.

This time the manager has decided to walk away himself for pastures new as Mark Robins decides that Huddersfield Town provide him with a better long-term fit to his ambitions.

Few City fans will shed a tear if they do not. We know there is very little loyalty in the game but, less than five months after being given the chance to revive his managerial career, Robins’ determination to force through the move is a reminder of the fact.

Whatever is said about the club’s owners there is no doubt that they provided this manager with the tools to do his job. For League One they put together a competitive squad and made signings at the right time. Even the day that Robins left saw Carl Dickinson being signed from Watford to provide cover at left-back for Blair Adams rather than City making do and mend with a right-footed player filling in.

Seven points separates the Sky Blues from the play-offs but there remains something to play for at the right end of the table, the distant hope of a JPT fightback and no threat of relegation. That leaves two possible avenues for the appointment of a new manager.

First is to bring someone in a short-term basis until the end of the season when the necessary due diligence can be done on the long-term successor.

Second is to do that work now, appoint the man the club feel will take them forward and allow him the final few months of the season to take stock.

Alongside the usual suspects in the betting are some interesting names, including former Sky Blues Andy Morrell, Steven Pressley (who was on the Huddersfield shortlist) and Kevin McDonald. Nigel Adkins seems to be the name on everyone’s lips, however.
