Were City A Decent Team All Along?

1-0 winners against Walsall on Saturday afternoon at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry City go into the final match of the League One campaign, away to Scunthorpe United next Sunday, relegated but in the top-half of the form tables.

While still struggling in front of goal, scoring four times in their last six matches, the Sky Blues defence has conceded just five in that time, contributing to three single-goal victories.

So, was it that a group of talented young players simply struggled to come to terms with the league until too late?

Did Tony Mowbray, Mark Venus and Russell Slade chop and change too much in the search for a more solid formula before Mark Robins hit upon the preferred formation and players to play in it?

Or was the tension of a tough campaign, on and off the field, sufficiently eased by the inevitability of relegation and the parallel prospect of a trip to Wembley?

Clearly the correct answer is ‘who knows’ and it may be a mixture of the three factors above given that Robins was unable to make any signings of his own after returning to the job.

He has given hope, on the playing side of things, that there is a slightly brighter future ahead despite the drop into League Two.

Off the field, takeover talk during the week has also provided a shaft of light for the summer ahead.
