Former Sheffield Wednesday left-back Peter Gilbert was a surprise substitute for Coventry City in Sunday’s friendly against Everton at the Ricoh Arena.

The 26-year-old has spent the summer trying to find a new club. He was linked with Huddersfield Town in mid-July before linking up with Southend United on trial.

His display for the Shrimpers against Stevenage on Friday evening certainly impressed Southend number two Paul Brush, who said: “His passing was of Championship quality which is what he is and he did well.”

The Sky Blues now look to have nipped in as they seek to replace Danny Fox following his move to Celtic.
