Last week, Vital Coventry pondered a potential summer move for Swindon Town hotshot Simon Cox as Chris Coleman searches for a player to fire his side into the play-offs or better next season.

One of Cox’s chief rivals for the title of League One top scorer this season has been Rickie Lambert of Bristol Rovers and the 27-year-old has made it clear that a chance to play at a higher level is firmly in his thinking for next season.

‘If a good Championship club came in it would be too good to turn down. My ambition is to play in the Championship,’ he told BBC Points West.

‘It needs someone to take a gamble on me, but I believe I can do it and I believe I can score goals there.’

Lambert’s career to date has taken him from Blackpool to Bristol via Macclesfield, Stockport and Rochdale but it is his performances while in the West Country, with 28 goals to his credit this season, that have seen the player linked with a move into the second tier of English football.
