The Sky Blue decade: 2007

Year In Brief: Poor form at the tail-end of 2006 carried over into the new year and FA Cup defeat by Bristol City spelled the end for Micky Adams.

Not too many tears were shed at the time but Adams had saved the club from relegation at a crucial point in its history, the transition from Highfield Road to the Ricoh Arena and the fact that City were still a Championship club may have proved key to events as 2007 drew to a close.

Iain Dowie meanwhile was appointed as Adams successor and enjoyed both initial success and a good start to the 2007/08 campaign, all the while waiting for concrete news on a long-promised takeover.

The takeover would come, dramatically at the eleventh hour after sterling work by Joe Elliott but Dowie wouldn’t be around to enjoy any of its potential benefits.

High Point: More than 10,000 City fans enjoyed a trip to Old Trafford and a 2-0 League Cup win which bought back memories of the FA Cup triumph 20 years earlier.

Low Point: Two months after beating Manchester United, City hosted Scunthorpe in front of 14,036 at the Ricoh amid reports of a transfer embargo, administration or even worse.

Brief Encounter: ‘Billionaire businessman, film director and actor’ Alki David claimed to be close to a takeover of the club before Ray Ranson and his SISU consortium emerged as the new owners.

Quote Unquote: ‘This takeover can only benefit Coventry City Football Club and I look forward to sitting down with Ray and discussing the way forward,’ said Dowie, perhaps unaware that he would not work with the new chairman for too long.
