While the Sky Blues were putting three goals past Notts County at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday afternoon, two FA Cup ties were also taking place in the city.

Coventry United played their first match at the Butts Arena, long-rumoured of course to be a potential new home for CCFC, a local derby against Rugby Town with the visitors triumphing 2-1 to set up a game against Romulus in the Preliminary Round on Saturday 19 August.

Coventry Sphinx also bow out of the competition after a home defeat at the hands of Boldmere St Michaels.

The trio of local clubs begin their Midland League Premier Division campaigns this Saturday although all three are away from home.

The season also gets underway with away trips for Bedworth United in the Northern Premier League Division One South and Stratford Town in the Southern League Premier Division.

Already underway in the National League North are Nuneaton Town and Leamington although they had contrasting afternoons, Nuneaton losing heavily at a Harrogate Town side who are expected to challenge for promotion this season while the Brakes marked their return to the higher level with an away victory at Gainsborough Trinity.

Both sides are at home on Tuesday evening and again on Saturday afternoon.
