Liam Davis has become the fourth youngster to sign a new Coventry City deal over the past few weeks.

‘The new manager has shown a lot of confidence in my ability, and hopefully I can repay him next season,’ the 20-year-old winger told the Sky Blues’ website after penning a one-year contract.

Midfielder Michael Doyle has been offered a new deal at the club.

Assistant boss Tim Flowers told the Coventry Telegraph: ‘He is a very good player and we want to secure him if we can so that we can build a team around a nucleus of young players like him and the likes of Michael Mifsud and Isaac Osbourne.’

Oldham Athletic have attracted controversy after saying that they will sign ex-Coventry City striker Lee Hughes when he is released from prison this summer.

‘Lee deserves a second chance and we consider this a top-class signing,’ director Barry Owen told the club website.

‘Oldham Athletic does not condone what happened and we are very sympathetic towards the family of the victim.

‘However, Lee Hughes is now nearing the end of his sentence and he has paid the price for what occurred.’

Other former City players in the news include Craig Bellamy, who is set to be the new Wales captain and is still being linked with a move away from Liverpool and one-time loan keeper Stephen Bywater who has his eyes on an England cap after Derby’s promotion to the Premiership.

‘I grew up with a few of the lads like Paul Robinson, Rob Green and Chris Kirkland and they are good but I don’t think they are anything special,’ he said.

‘I’m confident but not cocky.’
