Coventry City’s hopes of landing a new defender on loan in time for the Blackpool game this Saturday are receding fast, mainly due to the wage demands of the players being looked at and their parent clubs.
Chris Coleman and the club hierarchy are rightly sticking to their transfer policy and not being panicked into paying over the odds, particularly for a player who may only be at the Ricoh Arena for a short time.
‘We haven`t got anybody in yet and we`re not prepared to pay inflated prices of £15-20,000 a week to come in on loan. Two players we have looked at have been out for two months, so I don`t think that`s the right way to go.’
Having hauled his side into mid-table, the manager has some breathing space in terms of not having to pursue loan deals if they are not right for the club.
Norwich are just one example of a side packed with loan players who have struggled to progress this season while Blackpool’s early good form was built around a core of players no longer at the club.
If that means a patched-up defence containing Aron Gunnarsson at centre-half then so be it, the fans at Saturday’s game are likely to get behind the Icelander and young right-back Curtis Wynter much more than someone drafted in from the Premier League on a short-term basis.
