…Former Coventry City striker John Aloisi, currently with Spanish side Alaves, was named on Wednesday in Australia’s 23-man squad for the World Cup.

Another ex-Sky Blue, George Boateng is in Holland’s 28-man party, which will be cut to 23 shortly.

…Wigan have released David Thompson after the expiry of his contract at the JJB Stadium. The former City man joined the Latics from Blackburn in January.

Manager Paul Jewell said: ‘Thommo is a good little player, but he has found it difficult, in particular as he has had a couple of niggly injuries.

‘But he is very unlucky because you could see what he’s capable of at Arsenal.’

…Micky Adams has not ruled out a return to the Ricoh for Andy Morrell next season. The popular striker was handed a free transfer earlier this week but has a year left on his contract.

Adams said: ‘If Andy is still here on the first day of pre-season training, I certainly won’t be upset because he is a great lad to have in the squad.’
