Andy Thorn has confirmed that Kevin Kilbane will be his captain for the 2012/13 season, telling the official CCFC website: ‘Since he’s been with us he’s been an absolute mode pro.’

Signed on a free transfer in the summer the Republic of Ireland international has settled into a central midfield role in recent weeks and led by example in Tuesday night’s win at Dagenham & Redbridge where he netted a last-minute penalty.

‘Veteran’ signings made by the Sky Blues have had a mixed record in recent years but at this early stage Kilbane looks more likely to be a Dennis Wise success story rather than a Tim Sherwood disaster.

Reading winger Jordan Obita is being linked with a season-long loan switch to the Ricoh Arena following his parent club’s promotion to the Premier League.

‘greener’

Former defender Martin Cranie is in talks with Barnsley over a move to Oakwell, something of a surprise considering the Tykes are favourites for relegation from the Championship this summer. As with Sammy Clingan, currently without a club, players are finding out that the grass is not always greener away from CV6.

The League One campaign begins this weekend with the long trip to face Yeovil. Gary Johnson’s side eased to victory over Colchester United in the League Cup and assistant manager Terry Skiverton was in upbeat mood afterwards.

‘It is a tough game (against Coventry) and we know it is a tough game but when we play our game and we play our way I think we can beat anybody,’ he said.

The Sky Blues are in the unfamiliar position this season of being seen as a big scalp for many of the sides in the division. The resolve shown at Dagenham on Tuesday will need to be repeated on many occasions away from home, starting on Saturday.

***Update***The club confirmed on Thursday afternoon that Jordan Clarke has signed a new contract until 2014 with the option of a further year.
