Coventry City will not play in a formal reserve team league next season.

Chairman Ray Ranson told the club’s official site: ‘We feel it would be more beneficial for us to play friendlies against other teams, many of which would be based in the Midlands.

‘At the minute we are the victim of fixture congestion and it would aid the club to organise its own fixtures on its own terms.’

Skipper Michael Doyle requires a hernia operation but will leave it until the Sky Blues are safe from the drop.

He said: ‘The manager has been great and allowed me to take it a bit easier during the week.

‘I need an op but because of the situation we are in at the moment I have put it off until the end of the season.’

Defender Scott Dann meanwhile is delighted by his England Under-21 call-up.

He told the club’s website: ‘Its something I wasn’t expecting and I am really excited about linking up with the rest of the squad.

‘I am sure this is an experience I will learn from and it would be a dream come true to be involved in any way.’
