James McPake may already have agreed to join Coventry City next summer but his hopes of moving to the Ricoh Arena even earlier have been held up after the Scottish side demanded what City chairman Ray Ranson called an ‘unrealistic’ fee.

The demands from Livingston may be rooted in rumours that the club is experiencing financial problems.

Payment of wages over the New Year has been delayed and former owner Pearse Flynn is suing the club.

Defender Chris Innes, formerly of crisis club Gretna, told the Daily Record: ‘I’ve been in this position before and am well versed in what goes on when clubs have cash problems.

‘Hopefully it will be resolved sooner rather than later.’
