Coventry City crashed out of the League Cup to lower division opposition for the third season running on Tuesday night as Bury proved themselves worthy winners of the tie at Gigg Lane to make it a dismal start to the season for those of a Sky Blue persuasion.

Andy Thorn named a full-strength side for the fixture at Gigg Lane, making only two enforced changes from the defeat by Leicester on Saturday with Sammy Clingan on international duty and Carl Baker suspended.

Richard Wood and Roy O’Donovan came in and it striker O’Donovan who strengthened his claims for more regular football by being in the right place at the right time to score the opening goal of the game on 26 minutes.

There was little between the two sides however and Andy Bishop levelled for Bury 7 minutes earlier before the prolific Ryan Lowe netted with a quarter of an hour remaining and then wrapped things up on 88 minutes.

It doesn’t get any easier for Thorn’s men with a league trip to Birmingham City on Saturday and those who spent the summer forecasting a season of gloom at the Ricoh Arena will be feeling justified after the opening two games of the campaign.
