Coventry City staged a rousing second-half comeback but were ultimately well beaten by Championship leaders Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints, without ever looking as though they were in top gear, eased into a two-goal lead before the break against a home side who failed to create a single chance.

With City looking woefully short on confidence it looked at that stage as though a heavy defeat was on the cards but an immediate response from Jutkiewicz after half-time was followed by a lifting of the tempo both on and off the pitch.

‘momentum’

A lucky break of the ball allowed Platt to level things up but, having been briefly rocked, Southampton regained their momentum and netted twice more to maintain their promotion charge.

The international break comes probably at the right time now for Andy Thorn who will need to get all of his injured players back and make a loan signing to give City any chance of getting their season back on track.

Midfield looks the area where Thorn wants to strengthen and with Deegan, McSheffrey, Bell and Baker all under-performing he has plenty to ponder ahead of West Ham’s visit in two weeks time.
