Sky Blue Soap Opera – Omnibus Edition

The soap opera that is Coventry City Football Club enjoyed a bumper week of storylines this week as the relative calm that had descended on the Ricoh Arena over the past few months was blown away in emphatic style.

Thursday in particular brought a double-header of intrigue and plot as Mark Robins confirmed he was leaving for Huddersfield and the rent dispute between the club and Arena Coventry Limited (ACL) was re-ignited.

These two issues are linked in the sense that Robins claimed off-field issues were behind his reason to leave. His comments, however, contradicted themselves in the sense that he wanted ‘assurances’ from the owners and didn’t get them before going on to say ‘they (presumably the board and club staff) work their socks off and…need support from Coventry City Council.’

‘Overdrive’

The rumour mill is in overdrive of course as to what assurances Robins wanted but it is very hard to see what has changed over the past five months (apart from the rehabilitation of his own reputation) and, if he has been told we are headed for the abyss then why not stay until the end of the season, leave with dignity from the supporters who have backed you to the hilt and have a chance of getting a better job than the one he has taken?

But what’s done is done. On this particular issue it is hard to see what else the club could have done and if they can produce another managerial appointment like Robins then the on-field progress can continue.

Off-field it is hard to distinguish between the various claims and counter-claims being made. The most enjoyable aspect of Robins’ brief reign has been that we have been able to focus on the football for the first time in a long time. That, sadly, is no longer the case.
