David McGoldrick made an instant impact as a Coventry City player when scoring a superb televised goal against Stevenage and the on-loan Nottingham Forest man has continued his good form into the new Mark Robins era.

A crucial winner against Bournemouth last Saturday was followed by the opener at York on Tuesday as the Sky Blues made it to the regional quarter-finals of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

He has also earned himself the familiar cry of ‘sign him up’ from the stands, the plea that has been made to various managers and chairmen over the years, firstly in this writer’s memory when the likes of Mick Quinn and Chris Marsden impressed in their temporary spells at the club.

The loan market has changed considerably since those days of course and many players that come in from other clubs now are never going to become CCFC signings. Even the likes of Callum Ball and James Bailey, currently doing decent jobs for the Sky Blues on loan from Derby, are unlikely to join permanently as they are rated by their boss at Pride Park and are at the Ricoh for first-team experience more than anything else.

McGoldrick though is more of an old-fashioned loan signing with a permanent transfer for a player not in favour at Nottingham Forest a real possibility come the new year.
