Coventry City and Richard Shaw have parted company with each other just weeks after the former Sky Blues defender reverted to his assistant manager role following an ill-fated spell in caretaker charge of the first team.

Shaw returned to the club in the summer as part of a restructure of Andy Thorn’s backroom team but new boss Mark Robins has told CCFC that he does not need an assistant, with Steve Taylor and Lee Carsley performing coaching duties.

It’s a sad way to end Shaw’s long association with the club but perhaps an inevitable one given his failure to land the top job after Thorn’s sacking.

Development director Steve Waggott told the official club website: ‘Mark has worked with the current staff for several weeks but had told the board on his arrival that he would review the way things were organised and the shape of the structure.

‘He has done just that and really taken his time to assess how he believes he can best deliver success for Coventry City. He felt that he needed a flatter management structure and within that there was no need for an assistant manager role.

‘Richard was told yesterday, we wish him all the best for the future and thank him for his efforts during a testing time for the club.’
