Rock bottom for Sky Blues?

Coventry City’s fortunes hit a new low on Sunday as less than 10,000 at the Ricoh Arena watched the Sky Blues once again lose an early lead and all three points to Stevenage as they remain winless in League One this season.

On-loan striker David McGoldrick capped a positive opening for the home side with a superb curling shot to hand City the lead and it was through their first real attack of the game that Stevenage equalised as a parried shot was tucked away by Shroot.

Caretaker manager Richard Shaw could point to a possible offside on that goal and also two disallowed efforts for his men but, as with the home game against Bury, it was the second half display that did for the Sky Blues.

Stevenage defended deeper, realising that, for all their possession, the hosts were making less and less of an impression on goal. McGoldrick came close with a header after a deflected shot and then City’s liveliest performer played in Stephen Elliott who shot into the side netting.

The inevitablity of the situation was not lost on those scattered around the stadium and slack marking from a corner allowed Stevenage a lead which they rarely looked like relinquishing.

Even the boos at the end of the game were half-hearted, anger long ago having been replaced by apathy among the fans who can only now hope that the bottom has been reached. McGoldrick earned applause for his display while Richard Wood offered the only spark of leadership.
